The old man shuffled slowly into the restaurant. With head tilted, and shoulders bent forward, he leaned on his trusty cane with each unhurried step.

His tattered cloth jacket, patched trousers, worn out shoes, and warm personality made him stand out from the usual Saturday morning breakfast crowd. Unforgettable were his pale blue eyes that sparkled like diamonds, large rosy cheeks, and thin lips held in a tight, steady smile.

He stopped, turned with his whole body, and winked at a little girl seated by the door. She flashed a big grin right back at him. A young waitress named Mary watched him shuffle toward a table by the window.

Mary ran over to him, and said, "Here, Sir. Let me give you a hand with that chair."

Without saying a word, he smiled and nodded a thank you. She pulled the chair away from the table. Steadying him with one arm, she helped him move in front of the chair, and get comfortably seated. Then she scooted the table up close to him, and leaned his cane against the table where he could reach it.

In a soft, clear voice he said, "Thank you, Miss. And bless you for your kind gestures."

"You're welcome, Sir." She replied. "And my name is Mary. I'll be back in a moment, and if you need anything at all in the mean time, just wave at me!"

After he had finished a hearty meal of pancakes, bacon, and hot lemon tea, Mary brought him the change from his ticket. He left it lay. She helped him up from his chair, and out from behind the table. She handed him his cane, and walked with him to the front door.

Holding the door open for him, she said, "Come back and see us, Sir!"

He turned with his whole body, winked a smile, and nodded a thank you. "You are very kind." he said softly.

When Mary went to clean his table, she almost fainted. Under his plate she found a business card, and a note scribbled on a napkin. Under the napkin was a one hundred dollar bill.

The note on the napkin read...
"Dear Mary, I respect you very much, and you respect yourself too. It shows by the way you treat others. You have found the secret of happiness.
Your kind gestures will shine through those who meet you."

The man she had waited on was the owner of the restaurant where she worked. This was the first time that she, or any of his employees had ever seen him in person.

Note:
This story is based on actual events experienced by a friend from St. Paul, Minnesota. The note is the exact wording on the napkin that she has kept in her scrap book for fifteen years.

a reason to photograph

this morning, i've came across a post on RFilipinas forums, which made me think and rethink my reasons for taking pictures... i have been doing this since 2007 when i got hooked with lomo and until i found the better place to be and to learn...

what is it really? why am i doing this?

for years, i've relied on my memories to treasure moments in my life... i never had a concrete memory of my childhood... my family... my father... all of them are just in the mind... but people grow old.. they tend to forget things.. and memories, no matter how great they were... i want something i could see, touch, and feel... something to make me remember and re-live those precious moments...

most of the photographs i've had are pictures during recognition and graduation excercises.. the only time we are able to get our pictures taken, aside from the mandatory ID pictures..

my friends and classmates may have had pictures of me, which may find its way on facebook from time to time.. but most of our family pictures and albums were destroyed by typhoons...

sadly, the only memories of my family and my father i have on print were those taken at his funeral..

and i don't want that for my family and my son.. that is why i take snaps of his life.. of my family's journey... and it is my goal starting this year to take at least one picture of my son each day... if i missed taking one on film.. my trusty Nikon D40 or even my Nokia N82 would be enough to freeze a moment each day in his life...

they may not be good enough technically and mean nothing to the world but it speaks a lot for me and my family...

aside from the fact that i've always wanted a camera for my own since childhood and the fact that i love taking pictures... these are my most compelling reason to take photographs... and for me.. it is more than enough reason...

and for that primary reason, i believe i don't need fance gadgets and whatnot's.. they belong to the want category unless i decide to earn from this hobby... but for now, the camera's at home are more than enough...

Save the best for last...

I got this from a forwarded mail and the message is just to good not to be shared with everyone I know.

A friend of mine opened his wife's underwear drawer and picked up a silk paper wrapped package:

"This," he said, "isn't any ordinary package."

He unwrapped the box and stared at both the silk paper and the box.

"She got this the first time we went to New York, 8 or 9 years ago. She has never put it on, was saving it for a special occasion."

Well, I guess this is it. He got near the bed and placed the gift box next to the other clothing he was taking to the funeral house, his wife had just died.

He turned to me and said:

"Never save something for a special occasion. Every day in your life is a special occasion."

I still think those words changed my life.

Now I read more and clean less.
I sit on the porch without worrying about anything.
I spend more time with my family, and less at work.
I understood that life should be a source of experience to be lived up to, not survived through.

I no longer keep anything...
I use crystal glasses every day...
I'll wear new clothes to go to the supermarket, if I feel like it.
I don't save my special perfume for special occasions, I use it whenever I want to.

The words "Someday..." and "One Day..." are fading away from my dictionary. If it's worth seeing, listening or doing, I want to see, listen or do it now.

I don't know what my friend's wife would have done if she knew she wouldn't be there the next morning, this nobody can tell.
I think she might have called her relatives and closest friends. She might call old friends to make peace over past quarrels.
I'd like to think she would go out for Chinese, her favorite food. It's these small things that I would regret not doing, if I knew my time had come.

Each day, each hour, each minute, is special. Live for today, for tomorrow is promised to no-one.

If you got this, it's because someone cares for you and because, probably, there's someone you care about.

If you're too busy to send this out to other people and you say to yourself that you will send it "One of these days."
Remember that "One day" is far away... or might never come...

No matter if you're superstitious or not, spend some time reading it.
It holds useful messages for the soul.

I've been curious about capturing this unseen light around and the effects it shows. I got myself a generic IR Filter from ExtremeDeals to try this out and kill the curiousity. All I can say is that it's too much reliant on post processing but I liked it somehow..

While most people are celebrating the Feast of Our Lady of Penafrancia during Her fluvial procession, I've spotted a small group near Magsaysay Bridge having their "silent protest" and stressing their beliefs. They have slogans, some of which were taken from the bible, as for the devotees but taking less attention from the people who were all going to the Basilica for the arrival of Ina. The foreign national on the left even selected one of the slogans and gave it to the guy in front of him before he took some pictures.

Penafrancia 2009

After a couple of years I was able to visit Naga and celebrate the Penafrancia Festival. And for the first time, I was able to take photos of some events during the festivities.

There was not much with Friday's events as the sky was crying most of the time and clear at times. I was able to take some pictures of the CWC, though, thanks to Brod Areiz.

Friday night was much better. I was able to take some pictures of the last dawn procession of Ina where the ladies are the ones carrying Ina during the procession. Procession starts at 3 in the morning. My mother would usually go to the Naga City Cathedral at 8PM, the last available jeep from our hometown to the City, and would stay until 3 AM for the procession.

Fluvial Procession was scheduled to start at 4PM, Saturday. I was able to get some of the events at the Naga City Cathedral, where Ina stayed for a week. Ina is brought to the Cathedral, an event called the Traslacion Procession, on a Friday a week before the Fiesta. She stays there for a week and is brought back to the Basilica on a Saturday Fluvial Procession.

I was fortunate enough to get hold of one of the better vantage points and had a good view. Hope I did justice to the location given to me. Next year, I hope to do better.. after all, Ina's 300th year will come once in a lifetime...

Next year, I hope I could also take pictures of Ina during the Fluvial Procession and as She arrives to Her home in Basilica.. Keeping my fingers crossed...

I never really noticed the figure on the righ side.. This was actually a picture of two goats at our playground. I, however, made a lot of mistakes in my development of the film roll, having lesser developing time and not placing the locks on the reel, the developer and fixer had not consistently reached the right portion of the film, hence, being inconsistently developed, aside from the entire roll being underdeveloped.

I tried to rescue and recover some of the shots through picasa's contrast enhancements (shadows and highlights) and posted this one on another social website only to be called by one of my buddy about the "womanly figure" on the right side.. creepy..

A few days before I went to KL, I used my Yashica GS to shoot the streets of Manila and Intramuros with Atty. Areiz using Kodak BW400CN, a 400 ISO C41 Black and White film. Full of excitement, and after finishing the roll, I loaded the camera with Agfa CT Precisa 100 ISO slide film. I shot some frames with it at home and carried it along with me to KL. I was my only better camera at that time, along with the Diana, which I first got.

Shoot all the Precisa films I had in KL including this Lionfish shot. The only difference for this and the rest of the Aquaria shots is that I have "compensated" for the dim lighting inside the Aquaria. Seeing that my Yashica was set at 400, I tried to fool it by using ISO 100 for the Aquaria shots, and returned it back to 400.

After the films were processed, all frames in all of the films used were wasted, underexposed by 2 stops and a slide film at that. I just remembered, after all is lost, that I was using a 100 ISO slide film and shootign it at 400 all along... crap...

Lessons learned:Yashica's are great cameras and their meter, when working, delivers great results even at challenging lighting situations. Good thing I "compensated" and "fooled" the camera to shoot at ISO 100 for the Lionfish shot... how foolish!!

This is the first photo of my grandma i took since i had my own camera.

Back at home, elderly woman are very pious. They would go around house to house and pray on schedules. They are the ones being asked to pray for their dead loved ones without any fee. I think it has become part of the lives of the people in our hometown

Easter Sunday was spent with a road trip to Tagaytay. It was also the first out of town trip of Richard Frederic, after his first swimming in Laguna. We were supposed to take Pink Sisters first but it seemed that the mass has just ended so all people are going out that we were forced to go to RSM and have our early lunch.

After the sumptous meal and some moments taken on the D40, we went back to the Pink Sisters to pay a visit before finally heading home. Will post in the comments the link to the frozen memories.

A dad in Texas shared an amazing story that recently happened at the company where he works. His story makes a very strong case about our priorities...

We all know how the economy is going nowadays, and probably most of us, if not all, are concerned about the near
future, our jobs, and praying hard about it.

Yesterday at church I saw a good buddy of mine, and he was not looking good. So I took him aside and asked him what was going on. (We are accountability partners, and we often go straight to the point, no "how are you ?" between us.)

He told me that at his workplace "pink slips" were flying all around him, personnel reduction was the "word of the month," and he was very worried about his job. He works in IT and was studying madly to get a very hard IT certification to make his position harder to get rid of. I understood, since I share his same concern, and I am in the 'same boat' so to speak.

That made me think, and I told him the story I want to share with you all, that happened in my workplace last week.

Last Monday, as soon as we got to the office, we were told that one of the oldest executive managers in the company, "James" had passed on the night before, in his bed.

James was the General Manager of our most lucrative sales market, he had been the company VP and CFO in different times, and was one of the oldest employees of the company. The guy was working 12-14 hours a day, taking very little care of himself, and work was his life. You all see where this is going, right?

A few days after the funeral, I was in the car with our VP, going to Dallas , for business. In the car we started to talk almost immediately about James and what had happened. After a few casual comments of sorrow about his death, the VP made a comment that gave me the chills...

She said "You know, James "passing away" is going to save the company a lot of money, his salary was quite good, and all in all, we were considering "letting him go" anyway, for we still have to cut salaries and personnel... "

My heart sunk, for I realized how little "James" the man, the individual, had mattered to the company.

Technically, the comment was right. Under the moral and "human" perspective, it was chilling.

Today, a week after the event, "James " is nearly forgotten. Gone, merely a faint memory. His position will not be replaced, the company will save money, and that is the end of a 17 years old career.

Guys, put your time, heart and effort in your family and in God.

I still remember the stories my grandfather used to tell me, and he passed away 25 years ago. My children still laugh and cherish the stories I tell them about my mother's grandfather...

It's just money, folks... rust and moths. What really matters is in the hearts of people you live with, share laughs, experience life and faith with. You (we all) are not what your job says. We are fathers, husbands, a brother, a friend, a son of a wonderful God.

Your company will erase the memory of you in a few days, if you drop dead tomorrow. Your family will remember you forever -- put your sweat and effort where it will bear good fruits.

Sorry for the story, it's probably depressing, but I felt the urgent need to vent...

I just can't find the right words to name this captured moment. Baby Richard Frederic barely knows what a kiss is like, or what it stands for, or how it feels. For him, it's just another one of those playtime gestures, peek-a-boos, and bonding moments.

For whatever it is, for whatever reasons he does that, we are just so much grateful to God for giving us this bundle of joy in the house. For his good health and great physique (unlike other babies who are really cute and cuddly, Derek has his own charm behind those strong limbs, not much of a baby fat).

It's 2:07 PM, I'm at work and I can't wait to go home!!

Yes, i know its not that much but it's a good start for someone like me who doesn't know much about post processing and photoshop.

I hope to learn more and improve on this hobby of mine as it really gives me satisfaction.

I forgot to mention that I have also used my free trial of Topaz Adjust, a Photoshop Plug In, in tweaking the image.

I've tried some of the Photoshop Actions free from PanosFX and it turned out to be good somehow. There are more actions to try out and Baby Richard Frederic would now have a variety of images and photo manipulations using photoshop actions. It helps a lot for variety specially so because I'm not that good in Photoshop.

A man sat at a metro station in Washington DC and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, it was calculated that thousand of people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

Three minutes went by and a middle aged man noticed there was musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried up to meet his schedule. A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the till and without stopping continued to walk.

A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly he was late for work. The one who paid the most attention was a 3 year old boy. His mother tagged him along, hurried but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.

In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition. No one knew this but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth 3.5 million dollars. Two days before his playing in the subway, tickets for Joshua Bell's performance at a theater in Boston were sold out and the seats averaged $100.

This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of an social experiment about perception, taste and priorities of people. The outlines were: in a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour: Do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize the talent in an unexpected context? One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be: If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing ???

This one will be special for me as it is my First Christmas.. I'm usually asleep during this time but I tried to kept awake for the exchange gift at around 12 midnight as we welcome the Birth Celebration of Jesus Christ.

After the gift giving, I was so eager to open the presents I've received and boy they were wonderful.. I was only able to open a few gifts as I got really tired and sleepy.. more of these presents can be seen here, here, or here..

My wife's Uncle asked me to take a picture of their family during the Christening of my son. I used my D40 while Brod Areiz used my Mamiya C3 with Black and White film roll. Their only daughter would miss this one as she's the only one not in the picture..

Hope this gets into Rezzie's way in the future..

I have recently came across Chromasia Photoshop Tutorials and learned a lot from their free online tutorial about using curves to improve your pictures.

I can't wait to apply this to my pictures and see how much I've learned.

The pose you'll always remember for the TV ad of one of the infant milk formula in the Philippines would somehow be like this (less the hand, which is holding my son). Sadly, Richard Frederic cannot yet stand on his own feet and would need some assitance but he surely has great strong legs and arms.

One slack afternoon, I tried googling my name and found this one in one of the results. Aparently, the blogger used this picture of mine and made the appropriate credits for it but did not contact me or anything. I don't even know where the image was taken. This is one of my first takes in my early days of shooting film (after I got hooked into the Diana). The picture was taken with the Shanghai Seagull Twin Lens Reflex (TLR) camera, which I borrowed from Eazy.
